Academic Career : Served as the Head of Department of Philosophy at the Government Dhanamanjuri College of Arts, Imphal
Music and Dance : Trained in Rabindra Sangeet and classical music & dance at Santiniketan, Graduated in Hindusthani Classical music (Bhatkhande Lucknow). Vocal Artiste of All India Radio, Imphal for the past 30 years. One of the pioneers of Manipuri Modern Song.
Theatre: Well-known Actor and Director of Manipuri Theatre Recipient of several state awards. Contribution to the development of the modern form of Manipuri theatre.
Films: Associated with the production of the first Manipuri film MATAMGI MANIPUR in 1972, as actor and Music Director of the film. Has directed thirteen Manipuri Feature and thirty non-feature films till date and had given music to twenty-five films.
State Awards: He is a recipient of several state film awards, which includes - the Best Feature film Award for the film IMAGI NINGTHEM and the Best Documentary Film Award for the film SANA LEIBAK MANIPUR in the 1st Manipur State Film Festival held in 1985.
Also recipient of the Best Feature Film Award for the film ISHANOU and the Best Documentary Film Award for the KEIBUL LAMJAO NATIONAL PARK in the 2nd Manipur State Films Festival held in1995.
National Award and Festivals: Recipient of fifteen National Awards, six for feature film & nine for non-feature film. Several films by him had been selected to the Indian Panorama section of the International Film Festival of India.
International Awards: IMAGI NINGTHEM (My son, My precious) received Grand Prix at the International Film Festival at Nantes in 1982. The film also participated in several international films festivals. ISHANOU (The Chosen One) 1991 was the official selection of the Cannes Festival (in UN CERTAIN REGARD). The films also participated in several international film festivals. SANGAI- The Dancing Deer of Manipur (Produced by Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi) received five awards in the International Wild Life Film Festival held in Montana, USA. The film was declared ‘Outstanding Film of the Year 1989’ by the British Film Institute, London. The documentary film THE DEER ON THE LAKE received the Merit Awards in the International Wild Life Film Festival held in Montana, USA.
Retrospectives: Retrospective of Aribam Syam Sharma organized by Centre for Film Culture Assam, Guwahati 19-22 December 1996.
Retrospective of his non-feature films was organized by Films Division in Mumbai International Film Festival, 2000.
Special Screenings of his films were organized at Brooklyn Academy of Music, USA in 2001.

Other Participations: The film, IMAGI NINGTHEM was screened in the FILMOTASAV ’82 held in Calcutta in 1982. The same film also participated in the New Directors/New Films at New York (USA) and other international film festivals at Denver. Locarno, Toronto, Montreal, Hong Kong and at the FESTIVAL OF THREE CONTINENTS at Nantes (France).
The film ISHANOU participated in international film festival at Cannes, London, Singapore, Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver and Fribourg. The Documentary film ORCHIDS OF MANIPUR was screened at the International Wild Life Festival at Morocco in 1994.
Official Activities: First Managing Director of the Manipur Film Development Corporation Limited. He was a member of the Governing Council of FTII. He was a member of the Governing Body, Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute, Calcutta, was member Trustee, Cine Artiste Welfare Fund of India (NFDC) Ltd. Honorary co-ordinator of the Imphal unit of IGNCA since 1991.
Other Awards: The Government of India conferred him “Padmashri” in the year 2006.
He has been Awarded “Dr. V. Shantaram Life Time Achievement Award” 2008 by Films Division, Govt. of India
He is the recipient of Kamal Kumari National Award, 2009.
The Government of Manipur conferred him with the “MFDC Life Time Achievement Award” (Manipur State Lifetime Achievement Award for Film) in 2010
He was also conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award in music by the All Manipur Matam Eshei Kanglup in 2011 for his contribution in the field of music.
He was recently awarded the “Hawaibam Nilamani Memorial Award” for his contribution in the field of theatre.
